UPDATE: We won! A strong Homeowner Bill of Rights was signed into law on July 11, 2012. All Democrats in the California Legislature supported it!
Courage Campaign fights for an economy that works for everyone, not just the wealthy few.
We did it! After four years of work, we passed the Homeowner Bill of Rights through the California Legislature. We proved that even in this age of unparalleled corporate power, a smart, creative, and relentless campaign can beat back the corporate lobbyists. It's a proud day, but corporate lawyers are no doubt already concocting new ways to try and work around the rules to gouge homeowners, renters, and the rest of the middle class.
WATCH our new video exposing Asm. Felipe Fuentes (D-Los Angeles) as he sells out the middle-class to do dirty work for the Big Banks. Fuentes refuses to back the Homeowners Bill of Rights, despite 381,461 foreclosures in Los Angeles County. $112,475 in campaign donations from the mortgage industry must be very convincing.
Right now, Sacramento legislators are deciding whether to vote for the interests of the middle-class or cave under pressure from the Big Banks. All the key votes will come from Democrats, but unless they know we're watching, they might vote with the banks. Challenge them to do the right thing!
Sen. Juan Vargas is chair of the CA Senate Banking Committee and a key vote on the Homeowner Bill of Rights. He's deciding whether to side with the Big Banks or with the millions of Californians who have or will be foreclosed upon. Hundreds of Courage members have flooded his office with calls demanding he support a strong Homeowner Bill of Rights. But he still doesn't get it. So we thought we could help him understand how it feels to be screwed over by the Big Banks and lose his home -- just like 360,598 people the counties he's supposed to represent.
California Attorney General Kamala Harris needs our help. Join her as a co-sponsor of legislation to make the Big Banks stop their abusive treatment of homeowners. Fight the Big Bank CEOs and their lobbyists by demanding real mortgage industry reform.
Our ballot initiative is THE income tax ballot measure with overwhelming support in California. Van Jones thinks it will electrify a generation! It refunds cuts to education & vital services by asking millionaires to pay 3-5% more. Help us build a massive grassroots movement to make it law!
California Attorney General Kamala Harris just refused to give in to the Big Banks on the 50-state settlement. Sign our thank-you card!
There is an epic showdown coming next month as our country faces the "fiscal cliff" -- the Bush tax cuts will expire and major budget cuts will be triggered automatically. President Obama backed down on the Bush tax cuts in December 2010, but fresh from winning re-election, we need to make sure he keeps his commitment to end them. We helped put him in the Oval Office twice now, and we need to make sure he knows our priorities.
Millionaires like the Kardashians only pay 1% more in taxes than a middle-class Californian. That’s not OK, especially when budget cuts are decimating our communities. Watch our video that clearly demonstrates the unfairness of the situation. It’s been covered everywhere from CNN, to The Wall Street Journal, to PerezHilton.com.
