SIGN THE PETITION: Stand with Colin Kaepernick

Black Americans and their allies around the country are protesting persistent mistreatment by police. Now one famous athlete -- Colin Kaepernick, quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers -- is standing up for black lives by sitting down during the national anthem.

Kaepernick's statement shows real courage. And it has been powerfully effective, elevating the central narrative of the Movement for Black Lives in the press. But it's also made him a target of racist hate and conservatives in the media who have the audacity to question his patriotism.

Gov. Brown: Commit to Sign the Stronger California Women's Agenda Bills

August 26 is Women’s Equality Day, which marks the anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote. It is a day to recognize and lift up women’s political and economic power and an opportunity for Governor Brown to demonstrate his continuing commitment to women and families throughout the state.

SIGN THE PLEDGE: I'm fasting for farm workers!

NOTE: FASTING CAN BE DANGEROUS. THOSE WITH HEALTH ISSUES OR CONCERNS THAT MAY BE AFFECTED BY FASTING SHOULD NOT PARTICIPATE. ANYONE UNSURE OR WITH QUESTIONS SHOULD CONSULT THEIR DOCTOR BEFORE PARTICIPATING.

Farm workers are vital to our well-being as a nation. But for nearly 100 years, they’ve been treated like second-class citizens and denied real overtime.

But right now, we have an opportunity to right this wrong with Assembly Bill 1066 by Assemblymember Lorena Gonzalez.

SIGN THE PLEDGE: Don't Serve in Judge Persky's Court

Judge Aaron Persky -- from the Brock Turner rape case -- is so toxic that California residents are literally refusing to serve as jurors for cases he presides over.

These jurors are sending a powerful message: The California public has lost complete faith in Judge Persky. You can join them.

Stop Arming Fear

The Orlando shooting was an act of mass violence against the LGBTQ community, largely Latino, by a man fueled with hate. A man who should never have been able to walk into a store and purchase an assault rifle. No civilian should have the right to buy a weapon specifically designed to kill as many people as possible, as quickly as possible.

Whether it’s Donald Trump inciting fear of Latinos and Muslims to get votes, gun makers inciting fear of violence to sell guns, or bigots inciting fear of LGBTQ people to preserve power, fear and the hate it engenders are a threat to our fundamental values as a nation.

JOIN US to send an overwhelming message to our national leaders saying: #StopArmingFear.

Remove judge in Stanford rape case from the bench!

A judge just sentenced a Stanford University star athlete -- who was caught in the act of sexually assaulting an unconscious woman -- to only six months in jail.

Why? Because the judge, Aaron Persky, worried that a prison sentence would have a "severe impact on him" -- yes, the rapist -- and said, "I think he will not be a danger to others." It's a horrifying example of rape culture: when a judge is more concerned with the well-being of a rapist than with justice or public safety. This judge has no business staying on the bench.

SIGN THE PETITION: Repeal the Maximum Family Grant

The Maximum Family Grant (MFG) rule was created to coerce poor mothers into having less children. This unjust, invasive policy has forced nearly 140,000 of California’s children deeper into poverty simply because they were born poor. And it continues to threaten the reproductive freedom and privacy of thousands of women.

Tell CA Legislature: Improve police transparency and accountability!

Current CA law bars our access to information related to serious use of force, like officer-involved shootings, or police misconduct, including instances of racial profiling, sexual misconduct, and planting evidence. In other words, officers who have unjustly killed, harassed, or incriminated Californians may still be policing our neighborhoods, and we are none the wiser.

Senate Bill 1286 would change that by cracking open police misconduct and use of force records to the public.

Tell you CA Legislators: Help end Civil Asset Forfeiture Abuse!

Civil Asset Forfeiture gives police a free pass to impose on people’s civil rights and disproportionately steal from low-income people of color without even charging someone with a crime. In California alone, police pocketed nearly $600 MILLION from Civil Asset Forfeiture between 2006 and 2013.

It’s legalized robbery. And it’s past time for California to put an end to it.

Check out the People's Report Card of CA

The growing influence of corporate money in Sacramento -- from independent expenditures and political action committees --  is making it harder for California to lead as a model for the nation.

That's why the People's Report Card of California is bringing the information directly to the people by sharing which CA state legislators are out of step with their constituents and are instead deeply aligned with corporate and special interests.
