"It was here, four years ago where presidential candidate John Edwards was first inspired by the labor movement, says Sal Rosselli," president of California's largest labor union, United Healthcare Workers West. This weekend, Elizabeth Edwards will keynote their 2007 Leadership Conference.

As usual the members of UHW are inspiring care givers who take our health very seriously. Rosselli steers their passion and commitment to their profession with a successful strategy that holds great potential for our state.

In an exclusive conversation with Courage Campaign bloggers Rosselli is frank and open about the state of California's health industry and the road to reform.

UHW wants universal health care, but when it comes to the three competing plans offered by the Governor, Speaker Nunez or Sheila Keuhl's single payer initiative, they're picking no favorites.

Rosselli cautions that they will only support a plan that bolsters affordability for any individual mandate.

For that matter, they do support Nunez's 5% income cap. Which means, an individual's health care cost should be no higher than 5 % of their income.

On behalf of UHW's 152,000 members and growing, Rosselli looks forward to a democratic president being elected in 2008. He sees the passage of the Employee Free Choice Act and fresh appointments to the National Labor Relations Board. Both actions would strengthen a worker's right to unionize free from retaliation from their employer.

As for the state's health care system, Rosselli believes their fighting powerful hospital and nursing care companies both private and non-profit that often make profit over patient care decisions that impact people's lives on a daily basis.

But not to worry, their members, who provide us care when we have health care are on the front line to improve patient care as a powerful union that creates relationships with health operators from a position of organizing and political strength.

Stay tuned for up to date info on Mrs. Edwards message.

Health care, restrictions, cobra;
By Anna Ironside Sep 29th 2007 at 5:09 pm PDT
I lived in California for 33 years,and retired in 1997, and took the Cobra from the County where I worked. It takes over half of my retirement check to pay for it, We now have Health Net $504 a month, and Prior had Pacific Care $864. a month. I live in Texas now about 62 miles for citylimit sign to city limit sign. But from my house it over 75 miles to the nearest provider. If you were from Ventura and had to go to L.A. and find a doctor that is accepting new patients, good luck. Same problem here, so basically what I am paying for is my perscription and in the event of a major emergency. Have had one Mamogram in 10 years because of this crap. World wide, we are 37 in health care,being the super power of the world, that is a disgrace. WE defiently need changes in this area, but as long as insurance companies are the biggest lobbiest in Washington and campaigne contribuitors, we will have a big battle on our hands, you will need a lot of support from the common folk...good luck
