SEIU's Sal Rosselli Leads California Health Care Reform

"It was here, four years ago where presidential candidate John Edwards was first inspired by the labor movement, says Sal Rosselli," president of California's largest labor union, United Healthcare Workers West. This weekend, Elizabeth Edwards will keynote their 2007 Leadership Conference.
As usual the members of UHW are inspiring care givers who take our health very seriously. Rosselli steers their passion and commitment to their profession with a successful strategy that holds great potential for our state.
In an exclusive conversation with Courage Campaign bloggers Rosselli is frank and open about the state of California's health industry and the road to reform.
UHW wants universal health care, but when it comes to the three competing plans offered by the Governor, Speaker Nunez or Sheila Keuhl's single payer initiative, they're picking no favorites.
Rosselli cautions that they will only support a plan that bolsters affordability for any individual mandate.
For that matter, they do support Nunez's 5% income cap. Which means, an individual's health care cost should be no higher than 5 % of their income.
On behalf of UHW's 152,000 members and growing, Rosselli looks forward to a democratic president being elected in 2008. He sees the passage of the Employee Free Choice Act and fresh appointments to the National Labor Relations Board. Both actions would strengthen a worker's right to unionize free from retaliation from their employer.
As for the state's health care system, Rosselli believes their fighting powerful hospital and nursing care companies both private and non-profit that often make profit over patient care decisions that impact people's lives on a daily basis.
But not to worry, their members, who provide us care when we have health care are on the front line to improve patient care as a powerful union that creates relationships with health operators from a position of organizing and political strength.
