So much for Sen. John McCain's off-shore oil drilling plan. At least on the west coast, where all three pacific coast governors have announced a new action plan to clean coastal waters and beaches, restore fisheries, prepare for rising sea levels and to produce energy from the ocean's natural waves and tides.
As a first course of action, Governors Arnold Schwarzenegger; Ted Kulongoski of Oregon; and Chris Gregoire of Washington told the federal government to keep new oil drilling rigs out of their waters and to spend more money on programs restoring the health of the Pacific Ocean.
You may remember McCain's offshore oil drilling plan, which would allow states to request to have the federal moratorium prohibiting new offshore drilling lifted for waters off their coasts.
The pact between the pacific governors leave McCain's plan limited to the gulf states like Louisiana, Alabama and Florida where they already do lots of offshore drilling.
Keep in mind, Louisiana had a terrible oil spill in the Mississippi river last week when a tanker reportedly hit a barge. The clean up is expected to take some time.
It is difficult to give Scwharzenegger credit for anything at this moment for the obvious reasons, but it must be given where it is due. Only question besides when will he sign a new budget that protects basic social services in California is the question of why our governor continues to support John McCain for president?
