Stop Arnold, Marriage Rights, a Foreclosed Home and Trans Fat

The numbers are astounding. But the comments are painful to read.
When we launched our "Stop Arnold" campaign on Thursday morning, we had no idea it would spark a grassroots firestorm, becoming one of the most widely supported Courage Campaign actions ever. We just knew it was the right thing to do.

Over 48 hours later, 22,051 concerned citizens have signed on, including thousands of our friends from True Majority and CREDO Action, and the leaders of the California State Legislature -- Assembly Speaker Karen Bass and Senate President Pro-Tem Elect Darrell Steinberg.

But, with 200,000 state workers facing Gov. Schwarzenegger's plan to slash their salaries to the federal minimum wage of $6.55 an hour, we can't stop now.

First thing Monday morning, I will be flying from Los Angeles to Sacramento to personally hand-deliver your signatures -- and comments -- to the Governor, along with State Senator Dean Florez and Assemblymember Dave Jones.

Expect to hear updates soon!

Prop 8 Ballot Description Modified to Accurate Statement
The Capitol Weekly reports the influential ballot summary of the initiative to ban gay marriage in California has been rewritten….from a measure amending the state constitution to "provide that only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California"……to a measure that would "eliminate right of same-sex couples to marry."

Long Beach Congresswoman Laura Richardson Regains Her Sacramento Home
The statewide blogosphere has hit the Congresswoman pretty hard about losing her Sacramento area home to foreclosure two months ago, which I don't get, since it appears at the time she was not receiving any special favors from the industry, much as other Democratic congressmen on the east coast have reportedly enjoyed.

Clearly she did not handle this situation very well though, her answers were pretty evasive and begged for more questions to be answered.

Apparently, the freshman congresswoman is on track to regain ownership of the home. Long Beach Press-Telegram provides the details.

From the beginning she asserted that Washington Mutual improperly foreclosed the home. Well, they've reachesa settlement with a broker who then dropped a lawsuit which gave Richardson the opportunity to get her house back.

She's a fighter, that's why Long Beach loves her. I pray she holds true to her word about becoming a fierce advocate for homeowners in the grips of the mortgage crisis.

California Bans Trans Fats; First State To Do So
As reported in this blog more than a week ago, the state legislature was considering a move to improve the health of our food supply. No, I'm not talking salmonella or the agricultural industry. But the more common, everyday foods we buy at restaurants and bakery shops.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed a bill that will phase out the use of trans fats in the state's 88,000 restaurants. The new law requires that trans fat be eliminated from restaurant products beginning in 2010, and from all retail baked goods by 2011. Packaged foods sold at these same locations will be exempt.

This new law is a clear example of how government can work for the people to compel the "free market" to combat the state's obesity crisis, especially in children.

We shouldn't have to work to find a way to get the governor to identify with state workers the way the six-time Mr. Olympian body builder clearly agrees with eating healthy.
