Obama vs. Clinton: Good news... and bad news for you

Rick Jacobs testified again on Tuesday before the LA Board of Supervisors and, well, there are developments. I won't step on Rick's toes, so hit the flip and let him tell you all about it.

How much is your vote worth?

According to Dean Logan, the current Registrar of Los Angeles County, not very much. Despite the "double-bubble" disenfranchisement of tens of thousands of voters wanting to vote for Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton, he was unwilling to count each of the votes cast by "Decline-to-State" voters on Super Tuesday.

Until now. Because of your people-powered pressure, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has asked Logan to, as the San Francisco Chronicle reports, "tally the ballots of tens of thousands of nonpartisan voters... (and) change the confusing ballot in the nation's largest voting jurisdiction to prevent such a mishap from reoccurring."

This is good news, but there's one big catch: The resolution passed by the Board of Supervisors merely asks Logan to expand his random sample -- it does not force him to hand-count every "Decline-to-State" ballot.

That's why, until every vote for Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama is counted, we can not let up the pressure. Lawyers representing the Courage Campaign warned Dean Logan before the primary that the "double bubble" ballot would disenfranchise Decline-to-State voters. Now, our lawyers are continuing to pursue every possible action -- including filing a lawsuit -- to make sure Logan counts every vote before the certification deadline, just 19 days from now.

We don't know how Logan will respond to the pressure being applied to him by the Board of Supervisors. What we do know is that -- without the threat of legal action from the Courage Campaign hanging over Dean Logan's head -- we can't count on every single vote being counted.

To continue this campaign, we need your help today. Our legal bills and campaign expenses are piling up and we're facing a difficult decision: either we continue the fight to count every vote or we give up, assuming Logan will do the right thing. We need to decide by Monday. Can we count on you to contribute to our "Count Every Vote" campaign today?

The Sacramento Bee editorial board is calling the double-bubble controversy we uncovered "a major voting disaster." The Los Angeles Times editorial board lamented today that "L.A. County officials have long used a ballot whose design was known to consistently disenfranchise unaffiliated voters. They simply did nothing about it."

You can do something about it right now.

Please contribute today so that we can keep up the pressure on Dean Logan to count every vote by the impending certification deadline. Without your constant vigilance -- and the threat of a lawsuit lodged by the Courage Campaign -- we can't count on anything until every single vote is counted:

30,185 of you have signed our "Count Every Vote" petition in the last six days -- a signature-gathering drive that will likely become our largest action campaign ever in the coming days. To break that Courage Campaign record, we need to gather at least 35,544 total signatures. So, please keep forwarding the "www.couragecampaign.org/CountEveryVote" link to your friends, family and fellow activists.

On Friday, we plan to deliver your petitions directly to Dean Logan. But delivering your signatures and comments may not be enough. To continue this campaign, we need your financial support to make sure Logan knows:

If every "Decline-to-State" vote for Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton is not counted, there will be consequences.

Thank you for using your people power to make 2008 a new era for progressive politics in California.

Rick Jacobs
Chair

P.S. A few weeks ago, we asked you to support our multi-media campaign to inform "Decline-to-State" (DTS) voters about their right to vote in the Democratic Party presidential primary. Your phenomenal support made it possible for us to contact 1.1 million independent voters before Election Day. With tens of thousands of DTS voters disenfranchised in Los Angeles, we need your help again. You got them to the polls. Now you can help guarantee that every one of their votes is counted:

Can we count on you by Monday?
