As I noted briefly on Friday and Julia explained in more depth over at Calitics, Blackwater has officially dropped its plans for a training facility in Potrero. According to Blackwater WestVP Brian Bonfiglio, "the proposed site plan simply does not meet our business objectives at this time."
In short, the grassroots power of the citizens of Potrero defeated Blackwater. And that's reason for some pride. But Potrero activist Jan Hedlun put time aside to write a letter of thanks to the members and supporters of Courage Campaign. It's really something, and I hope you'll go read the whole thing. While you're there, we've made it easy for you to write your own letter of thanks and/or celebration to the people of Potrero who took on Goliath and won.
Here's the email that Rick Jacobs sent out to Courage supporters earlier today, describing the victory better than I could:

I'm a San Diegan, and so this one is close to my heart. It seems Blackwater has lost its taste for America's Finest (county):
Julia has more details over at Calitics, but the basics remain: The people of Potrero stood up against Blackwater and won. Whatever comes next, they flat out won this round.

Re: Application for Major Use Permit (P06-069)
Dear Jarrett:
On behalf of Blackwater West, I am writing to inform the County of San Diego that, effective today, we are withdrawing Application P06-069 for a Major Use Permit for our proposed project in the community of Potrero.
After examining the capacity of our existing facilities and our business development goals, we have decided not to pursue plans for a training campus in Potrero.
Although our project would have brought a great benefit to San Diego County- providing local, state and federal law enforcement with access to low-cost superior training facilities while brining much-needed jobs to the area- the proposed site plan simply does not meet our business objectives at this time.
Please refund all funds on deposit and not expended for permit processing. Thank you for your assistance.
Sincerely,
Brian Bonfiglio
Vice President
Blackwater West

Despite widespread outrage about their actions in Iraq, Blackwater USA is still looking toward their future growth as a private army. In response, a Stop Blackwater West educational encampment was held in Potrero, CA this weekend. As you may already know, Blackwater USA is proposing to build a training facility in a peaceful, rural valley east of San Diego and just a smidge north of the US/Mexico border. If Blackwater succeeds in their plans, the peace, quiet and natural beauty of this mostly undeveloped valley 45 minutes east of San Diego will be shattered, and the infamous mercenaries of Blackwater USA will have established their foothold in Southern California. A majority of Potrero residents do not want this facility to be built in their community. Read More »
