Courage Campaign: Darrell Issa is a Hypocrite on White Supremacy

California Group Slams Issa for Speaking With White Supremacist, Anti-Immigration Group FAIR

Last week, Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) called on the House Judiciary Committee to hold hearings on white supremacists and other hate groups saying that he wanted to “more fully understand” what led to neo-nazi violence in Charlotteville two weekends ago.  But ThinkProgress is reporting that in June, Issa gave an interview at a conference put on by FAIR (Federation for American Immigration Reform), an organization that has been labeled by the Southern Poverty Law Center as a hate group and white supremacist organization.

Eddie Kurtz, executive director of the California-based Courage Campaign explained:

“Rep. Darrell Issa is a hypocrite who has endorsed, supported and enabled hate groups. Just like Donald Trump, Issa has systematically ignored and even abetted white supremacist movements in the United States for years. When the Department of Homeland Security, under President Obama, produced a report calling right-wing extremist movements a key domestic terrorism threat -- Congressional Republicans threw a fit until the report was revoked. They did the same when the Department of Homeland Security expressed concern about white supremacists infiltrating law enforcement and the military. But now that it is politically expedient, members of Congress like Darrell Issa are pretending they haven’t been playing patty-cake with hate groups like FAIR and the Family Research Council for years.

Darrell Issa is a hypocrite on white supremacy. If Issa is serious about confronting white supremacists in the United States, he might start by avoiding their events. And rather than just call for hearings, he should speak out against groups like FAIR and the Family Research Council by calling them what they really are: hate groups. Darrell Issa thinks he can lie to California voters, but they are a lot smarter than he thinks.”
