Courage Campaign on Senate Democrats Caving on their Core Values and Voting to End the Government Shutdown
Courage Campaign Praises Sens. Harris and Feinstein for Not Abandoning DREAMers
Moments ago, Senate Democrats caved to Republicans, accepting pledge to hold a vote on immigration legislation in the coming weeks, and voted in favor of a bill that would fund the government through February 8, effectively ending the #TrumpShutdown.
In reaction to the vote, and the welcome refusal of California’s Senators -- Dianne Feinstein and Kamala Harris to support the bill -- Eddie Kurtz, executive Director of the California-based Courage Campaign, issued the following statement:
“The deal too many Senate Democrats just supported is a bad deal for our country and a bad deal for the hundreds of thousands of DREAMers in California and all over the country. We are deeply disappointed that Senate Democrats caved in the face of bigotry and demagoguery spewed by Donald Trump and the Republican Party. Democrats traded the lives of DREAMers for empty promises from Republicans who have proven themselves to be serial liars. A deal that revolves around Donald Trump, Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan keeping their words is not worth the paper it is printed on.
“California has more DREAMers than any other state, and we know how important it is to protect these vital members of our communities from deportation. We will not stop fighting until every DREAMer is protected.
“We applaud Senator Feinstein and Senator Harris for refusing to abandon DREAMers. We trust that they will hold firm until a deal is presented that reflects our nation’s values and keeps undocumented children safely in the communities where they belong.
“We will not stop fighting until we win this fight, and we will always remember who was with us and who wasn’t.
