Statement from Eddie Kurtz, executive director of the California-based Courage Campaign:
“Courage Campaign strongly condemns any threat of violence against any public official, and we are deeply dismayed to read reports of threats to Speaker Rendon over his decision to block SB562, the Healthy California Act. Threats of violence fly in the face of the progressive values that led Courage Campaign and our allies to organize so passionately for a single payer health care system in California.
“At a time when Republicans in Washington are trying to take a wrecking ball to health care in this country, we strongly disagree with Speaker Rendon’s decision to block debate on the Healthy California Act - legislation that could have served as an important counterbalance to the current Republican plan to reduce coverage and increase costs. Only by vigorous debate over ideas and policies - can we come to the best solution for all.“
