TODAY 10:30AM: Southern CA Leaders Rally Demanding State Assembly Pass the California Values Act

LOS ANGELES -- Today at 10:30 AM, Los Angeles residents joined by members of the California-based Courage Campaign, SEIU United Service Workers West, Asian Americans Advancing Justice, Long Beach Immigration Rights Coalition, LA Voice, and California Immigrant Policy Center, among other organizations will hold a press conference at LA’s City Hall calling on the California State Assembly to pass Senate Bill 54, known as the California Values Act.  With one day left for the Assembly to take action, the progressive coalition is banding together to lift up SB 54 and pushing Assemblymembers to move forward with its passage.

The California Values Act would protect California’s communities from Trump’s mass deportation agenda and prevent state resources from being wasted on separating families - and members of the coalition argue that the legislation is especially important in the wake of President Trump’s decision to end DACA - putting more than 800,000 young adults in jeopardy.

WHAT: Press Conference Calling on Assembly to Pass SB 54
WHEN: Thursday, September 14th. 10:30 AM PT
WHERE: Los Angeles City Hall. 200 N Spring St, Los Angeles, CA 90012

Confirmed Speakers:

  • Sandra Diaz, SEIU - USWW
  • Luis Nolasco, ACLU of Southern California
  • Anabella, SEIU - USWW member
  • LA Voice faith leader

Although an agreement has been reached between Senate pro Tem Kevin De Leon, the author of the Act, and Governor Jerry Brown, SB 54 must still pass on the Assembly floor before it arrives at the Governor’s Desk.

Following the press conference, janitors, security officers and community members will be leading delegations to the district offices of a number of key legislators to encourage them to vote yes on SB 54.

“This is our last chance to fight for the California Values Act -- which would work to protect California’s communities from Trump’s hateful, ignorant agenda to separate families and deport people out of the United States by the masses,” said Eddie Kurtz, Executive Director of Courage Campaign. “The bill would also fight to ensure that schools, health facilities, courthouses, Department of Labor Standards Enforcement facilities, and other spaces are accessible and safe for all Californians.  It’s on all of us to resist this administration’s attempt to divide the country across racial lines--and come together to stand with our most vulnerable communities by keeping immigrant families together. That’s why Courage Campaign and its allies are meeting at LA City Hall to lift our voices and demand that California assemblymembers pass SB 54.”

“California is leading the resistance to Trump’s cruel and racist agenda. With the decision to rescind DACA and stepped up ICE raids in our neighborhoods, legislators need to know that SB 54 is a critical part of that resistance.,” said Sandra Diaz, Vice President of SEIU United Service Workers West.
