Take Action

Call your Senator and tell them to pass the RISE Act

The RISE Act -- one of the most consequential pieces of criminal justice reform legislation this year -- urgently needs more public support to guarantee its passage.

This is an all hands on deck moment. Last year, corporate Democrats -- kowtowing to police unions, district attorney associations, and other law enforcement interest groups -- partnered with reactionary Republicans to help kill the RISE Act in committee. We can’t let the RISE Act fail this year -- will you call your state senator and tell him that you want to pass the RISE Act?

Call your State Senators and ask them to support the Healthy CA Act (SB 562)!

The California State Senate Appropriations Committee just passed single-payer! This was the last step before it's voted on by the entire Senate. But the bill must be passed on the Senate floor by June 2. And your State Senator needs to hear from you!

You have the power to make a real difference. Legislators listen when they receive phone calls from their constituents. Calls let them know real people, not special interest lobbyists, really care about the issue. One phone call can mean as much as 10 or even 20 emails! Call now -- you can use the sample script provided in the link below.

Tell your Senator to vote YES on the RISE Act!

The RISE Act is one of the most consequential pieces of criminal justice reform legislation this year. The RISE Act would repeal a failed drug war policy that gives drug defendants three extra years in jail for each previous drug sale conviction. It's excessive, it's unnecessary, and it's just plain ineffective. Let's invest in people, not prisons!

It's also expensive. Policies like this have led to severe overcrowding in California’s jails, costing the state and counties $2.5 billion dollars each year. We’re throwing away money that could be spent on affordable housing, job training, or rehabilitation services -- priorities that keep California communities safe and healthy, and that keep people who've committed crimes from reoffending. Let's invest in people, not prisons!

Are your state legislators really representing you?

If California is going to stand up to similar attacks by the GOP and Donald Trump's dangerous agenda, then we need to have high expectations of our elected officials. They need integrity. They need diligence. They need courage. And if legislators can't live up to those expectations, they need to be held accountable.

That's why we're launching the 2017 People's Report Card of California -- it clearly shows which California state legislators have taken courageous votes for the public interest and which ones are putting corporate interests first.

Are your state legislators champions of the people -- or are they in the Hall of Shame? Find your representatives' grades at CourageScore.org!

Call your Representative NOW: Hands off our health care!

If Trumpcare passes, 24 million people would lose access to affordable health care. And millions of people with health insurance would be at risk of losing coverage for pre-existing conditions. That's not right. It's not decent. And it's not American.

You have the power to make a real difference. Legislators listen when they receive phone calls from their constituents. Calls let them know real people, not special interest lobbyists, really care about the issue. One phone call can mean as much as 10 or even 20 emails! Call now -- you can use the sample script we've provided by clicking the link below.

Guarantee health care for all! Pass the Healthy California Act.

Every Californian deserves high-quality, guaranteed health care. But even under the Affordable Care Act, over three million Californians are left out and still lack health insurance. They’re our parents, children, grandparents, neighbors, co-workers, and community members.

The Healthy California Act would establish a transparent health care system and a universal standard of safe, quality care -- essentially an improved Medicare for every Californian.

Sign the petition if you agree that health care is a human right and that it’s time every Californian is guaranteed health care.

Tell California Legislators: Pass the California Money Bail Reform Act

California’s bail system is completely and utterly broken. Our state wastes more than $1.8 billion each year jailing people who are waiting for trial -- and ruins the lives of countless people who’ve been accused of a crime but can’t afford exorbitant bail amounts.

New legislation called the California Money Bail Reform Act of 2017 would reform our bail system. Instead of requiring money bail payments in all cases, regardless of a person’s risk, SB 10 and AB 42 would require courts to judge each case individually before setting the terms of release. This reform is a complete no-brainer. And it has a track record of success.

Call your state senator NOW: Protect immigrant communities!

Donald Trump's rampant immigration raids are terrorizing our immigrant friends, neighbors, and community members across the state. We can stand up to this onslaught by passing the California Values Act (SB 54), an urgent bill that would stop state resources from being used to aid Trump’s anti-immigrant agenda.

California legislators: say NO to Trump’s Muslim registry in CA

The Trump Administration’s policies are tearing California’s families apart. From immigration raids to travel bans to the border wall to hate crimes, the fear is unmistakable -- and it’s just the beginning.

The Religious Freedom Act (SB 31) -- which is currently moving through the California Senate -- will protect Californians from yet another registry based on religion, nationality, or ethnicity. This bill must be passed to protect our neighbors from this blatant discrimination. Sign the petition to ask your lawmakers to support the Religious Freedom Act (SB 31).

Host a single-payer house party

In partnership with SEIU and Health Access, Courage is planning actions over the next few weeks to make it clear that Californians demand their reps stand up to Trump and vote to protect the ACA. At the same time, we’re also working to pass a bill to guarantee health care for ALL Californians. The Healthy California Act would contain rising health care costs, and, most importantly, save lives.

We’re calling for statewide house parties on Saturday, April 1 in cities and towns across California to bring together friends, family and neighbors to build awareness and support for single-payer.
