Courage Campaign Applauds SCOTUS Marriage Equality Ruling

Statement from Dr. Paul Song, executive chairman of the California-based Courage Campaign on news that the US Supreme Court, in the case of Obergefell v. Hodges, ruled that marriage is a fundamental constitutional right and should be extended to all same-sex couples around the country:

“Earlier today, America won. The Supreme Court ruled in favor of common sense, in favor of love, and in favor of families. Lesbian and gay couples can now marry and enjoy the same legal protections as all other loving couples anywhere in our great nation. This historic ruling means that no state, whether through legislation or a constitutional amendment, can deny a same-sex couple the right to marry. No ifs, ands, or buts!

Under the visionary leadership of Courage Campaign’s founder Rick Jacobs, we were the first to support the historic Prop. 8 lawsuit and the first to live blog the trial via the groundbreaking EqualityOnTrial.com (previously known as Prop8TrialTracker). Rick and the team went on to debunk the National Organization for Marriage, to engage the nation on repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, and to train thousands of people to tell their personal stories at Camp Courages across the country. Courage Campaign and its members have fought tirelessly to grant thousands of loving gay and lesbian couples the right to marry state by state. And today is our defining moment.

As we celebrate this historic day, we know that this victory will also bring legal challenges and attempts on the state level to deny rights to LGBT couples and individuals. And Courage Campaign will be there to fight back! EqualityOnTrial.com will continue our work of shining a legal spotlight on states and communities that deny equal rights to all its residents -- but no matter what challenges lie ahead, today is a day that the community has earned!”
